The intersection between HR strategy and HR technology

Who/What I’ll be Watching in 2006

Vendors:

  • Success Factors – Good functionality built on good technology. Add to that a positive cash flow and things are looking up.
  • Authoria – Strong brand, technology and marketing.
  • I’m not sure what 2006 looks like for them, but I have a feeling that SF and Authoria are going to outclass the rest of the TMS field.

  • Virtual Edge – Same as SuccessFactors. Great functionality and technology will begin erroding Taleo’s functional dominance.
  • Workday.com – Who know’s what will happen? But when Duffield talks, I’ll be listening.
  • Oracle Fusion – Gotta watch just because it’s the only Enteprise ERP/HRMS besides SAP. No real movement from Fusion in the HR arena for 2006, but I’m sure I’ll hear a few leaks here and there. I’ll keep you posted.

  • Processes:

  • Performance Management – Most of the world is still getting on board with HR technology and don’t have greatly automated performance yet. This is the second thing anyone buys after HRMS and the market is wide open with lots of buyers.
  • Compensation Management – Simple logic tells me that after someone goes and buys performance, they immediately want to tie compensation to it. The vendor who capitalizes on the performance space is also going to dominate the compensation space.
  • Onboarding – The linkage between Talent Acquisition, Talent Management, and engagement continues to grow. True onboarding experiences beginning with the offer letter and lasting through the first several months of employment will require technology that few have even conceived of yet.
  • HRO – We’ll see if there is alot of movement into the mid-market HRO space. If there is, watch significant buying here. Accenture, Hewitt, Convergys joining ACS, Fidelity, and ADP as mid-market players. Look to ExcellerateHRO to gain some big wins.
  • Portals – As you’ll see from my next few posts, this is the future. It may not get here in 2006 for the vast majority of organizations (maybe self service, but not portal), but adoption will increase with more vendors getting into this space and making it more affordable.

Workstream is good stuff. Good base technology and good functionality. They are working hard on improving their user interface and usability.

If you look at my original scorecard here:

They definitely play with the top tier of vendors. Their trouble is with a poor set of financials and an apparent lag in growth compared to their main competitors.

I should have entitled this post as “movers and shakers” or something. WS is definitely a company to watch. I just don’t see them changing the shape of the market/industry this year.

    4. […] Workstream has always been one of my favorite vendors. They have great depth and breadth in their TMS suite, but their financials have plagued them. In the last year, their competitors have made strong market moves and gained momentum. […]
