Top HR Technology Vendors by Function

I always have my list of top vendors, but it’s nice to see what the surveys are saying as well. For HRMS, this lines up 100% with what I always thought domestically for enterprise HRMS. (see chart at bottom of page)

  1. Peoplesoft
  2. ADP Enterprise
  3. SAP
  4. Oracle/Lawson (tied) ((CedarCrestone 2005 Workforce Technologies and Service Delivery Approaches Survey,Eighth Annual Edition” page 10. Check out the survey at http://www.cedarcrestone.com/))

I’m slightly shocked at the benefits administration vendors. It’s not that the rankings surprise me in the least bit. PS, Hewitt, and then ADP is a no brainer and actually quite obvious that they would be ranked in that order. What surprises me is the strong hold in-house PeopleSoft has on the market. I would really have thought the outsourcers (Hew and ADP) would have more market share.

Again, payroll is also a no-brainer. PeopleSoft and then ADP. I’m surprised SAP didn’t make the list, but not at all surprised Ceridian didn’t make the list for large organizations. However, The actual participant was what I consider mid-sized (fewer than 10K employees. Ceridian not making the list is a big blow to them.

If we look at timekeeping, it’s Kronos, Peoplesoft and then SAP. I exclude ADP because they sell Kronos. So Kronos actually has a very large lead over the next competitor PeopleSoft.

Lastly, employee and manager self service is interesting since it’s PeopleSoft and then ADP. ESS and MSS should pretty much follow along the lines of the HRMS deployment, so again, no major surprises here.

What’s important to consider is the tough situation Oracle is in. PeopleSoft holds a strong position in almost all of the markets. Oracle HR does not. As they move to Fusion, a strong product and branding message needs to be delivered to the user and client population to keep them moving to Fusion. SAP is currently making strong moves against PeopleSoft and is a risk for Oracle.

    Dubs,
The cedar study always makes good reading it is well structured and picks out a lot of interesting trends, but I don’t think you can use it as an indicator of market presence. The survey respondents are more likely to be from the cedar customer base, rather than the broader market. If my memory is correct Cedar is predominately a psft shop.

You all might be interested to hear what I found in 2003 when I conducted the TCO Study for payroll and HRIS for PricewaterhouseCoopers (commissioned by ADP).

The study had no selection criteria other than companies needing to process payroll in house for 1,000 or more employees. All companies that passed that test could participate in the study.

In all, over 180 companies participated. Here is a partial breakdown for the respondents. I always thought it was probably a pretty good indicator of the insourced market share at the time:

    PeopleSoft 25%
    Lawson 8%
    SAP 7%
    Homegrown 7%
    Ultimate 6%

Based on the numbers in the Cedar Creekstone study, however, it would appear that PeopleSoft Oracle has 75% of the in house marketshare (51% of the 68% after taking out ADP outsourced)

This just doesn’t seem at all possible. Am I missing something in the study? Was this actual marketshare, or a survey of what the market believes are the top providers?

Perhaps it is a result of the effect that Thomas Otter mentioned above. If so, we might need to take this study with a grain of salt.
