The responsible worker has a personal commitment to getting results. 1
Drucker calls this person the responsible worker. I (we) have always called this person the engaged worker. Certainly responsibility and engagement are different, but I think Drucker’s “personally committed” workers are better defined by the term engagement as we use it today.
Our goal in Human Resources is to have an entire workforce of engaged employees. While it’s obviously not entirely possible, each incremental increase in engagement increases productivity and overall employee satisfaction. Engagement is contagious. Incremental increases in engagement also increase satisfaction scores for non-engaged employees and make your lives in HR easier to entrench the employer brand.
