The Toyota Way: Principle 7

Use visual control so no problems are unhidden.

One of the best modern tools we have is the data warehouse and the dashboard.  We have totally current metrics available to any of us, if we would just implement the technology.  However, there are also tools that many of us use day to day ins some of the most mundane applications.  In our call centers we have a constantly scrolling view of how many people are on hold and how long they have been waiting.  Our benefit enrollment sites can tell us by the minute what our success rate is for getting employees enrolled sooner rather than in the last 2 days of open enrollment.

Toyota uses visual controls as in having a manager working on the shop floor to observe what’s going on.  We’re not able to do that in our jobs, but we can observe our processes.  We just need to know to ask, because the data is already available to most of us.
