The intersection between HR strategy and HR technology

Driving Pet Peeve’s and HR Technologies

Some lessons are just universal in life.  Others are not.  Here are a few that I came up with while extraordinarily bored:

1) If you don’t know how to drive a big car, don’t buy and SUV
Corollary: Sometimes you really don’t need PeopleSoft or SAP.  Don’t go for big scale just because everyone else did – sometimes the added complexity is jut going to make matters worse

2) Smokers should think of cigarettes like any other litter – they don’t get flicked out the car window
Corollary:  Go paperless – save the world

3) When I’m blaring my horn at you, look around and figure out what’s going on.  Don’t keep coming at me pretending to be clueless
Corollary:  There are some pretty good warning signs out there that your function or employee population is at risk.  Listen, diagnose, and then act quickly.  But don’t ignore.

4) Don’t tailgate me when the fast lane is wide open
Corollary: Figure out what’s slowing your progress.  There is often a better way either in process, technology, or staffing.  If you sit on your butt and are frustrated by your HR department’s progress but don’t make a move to fix it, don’t complain to me.

5) At a four way stop, the guy turning left waits for the oncoming traffic to pass before proceeding, not the other way around
Corollary:  Process is important.  You define things a certain way for a reason – often efficiency or compliance.  Deviations from defined processes sometimes (not always) spell disaster

For those of you who are daily readers, you’re probably thinking that I’ve run out of things to write about.  You’d be correct…

How can you have run out, there is a whole internet out there to write about 🙂

(Actually it is really easy to run out of things, personally things in general have become very slow not a lot of new exciting stuff, or old exciting stuff either. But experience shows there will be exciting stuff just around the corner, you need to hold out until then.)
