{"id":1363,"date":"2010-06-07T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-07T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=1363"},"modified":"2010-06-11T14:37:59","modified_gmt":"2010-06-11T22:37:59","slug":"real-life-is-analog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=1363","title":{"rendered":"Real Life is Analog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/analog51.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1411\" title=\"analog5\" src=\"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/analog51-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/analog51-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/systematichr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/analog51-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Not Digital.<\/p>\n<p>We all love digital.\u00a0 It makes our lives easier and faster.\u00a0 But I\u2019m not sure we all have an appropriate understanding of what digital and analog really mean.\u00a0 The fact of the matter is that we don\u2019t live in a digital world.\u00a0 Our world is purely analog.\u00a0 We just have digital processes that happen in some mysterious box in technology-land.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take an easy example:\u00a0 I use Google Voice.\u00a0 One of the things that Google does for me, is it takes my voice mails and turns them into text.\u00a0 That text is then loaded into my Google Voice site and simultaneously emailed to me.\u00a0 To be honest, I have not listened to a voice mail in months because for the most part, I understand the message that the caller is trying to get to me, even if the voice to text translation is not perfect.\u00a0 The order of the transaction goes something like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Analog:\u00a0 Caller leaves a voice mail<\/li>\n<li>Digital:\u00a0 Google synthesizes and translates the analog signal to text<\/li>\n<li>Analog:\u00a0 I read or listen to the voice mail<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019m not making any judgments here \u2013 all I\u2019m saying is that we as people are analog and we operate in an analog world.\u00a0 I\u2019m not an expert, but I\u2019m confident when I say that we will never touch the digital world.\u00a0 (we are not in the Matrix movies)\u00a0 That said, the increasingly digital influence our world has is pretty amazing.\u00a0 If we don\u2019t live in a digital world, then what does digital do for us?\u00a0 Well, it provides speed, context and interpretation of the analog world around us.<\/p>\n<p>In HR, every business process that we do is analog.\u00a0 We call technology \u201cenablers\u201d and they are.\u00a0 Employees enter personal data changes into the self service portal, managers call us to request reports, business partners update managers on their talent.\u00a0 Increasingly, rather than submitting requests, managers go to a portal (yes, that is an analog action) where data has already been interpreted and formulated for them.\u00a0 They can immediately view the progress of open requisitions, performance reviews and the turnover rates of their organization.\u00a0 The manager still had 2 analog actions of going to the portal and of receiving the data (through the eyes \u2013 yes, analog), but the digital world took all the data entered previously (analog) and created these outputs for the manager (digital) when she was ready for its consumption (analog).<\/p>\n<p>Here is a thought though.\u00a0 The most significant contributor to employee productivity might be employee engagement.\u00a0 The most significant contributor to employee engagement is probably the analog direct communication with their direct supervisor.\u00a0 The conversations (analog) that every employee has with managers is what defines how well a business can utilize their talent.\u00a0 We can digitize as much as we can for the purpose of simplification, efficiency and context.\u00a0 But at the end of the day, the key HR transactions are still going to be analog, and for the foreseeable future, we\u2019re not going to change that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not Digital.
