{"id":178,"date":"2005-04-19T13:54:00","date_gmt":"2005-04-19T21:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=178"},"modified":"2005-12-02T21:39:12","modified_gmt":"2005-12-02T21:39:12","slug":"a-primer-on-hrms-evolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=178","title":{"rendered":"A primer on HRMS evolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">OK \u2013 so I promised a \u201cprimer on HRMS evolution\u201d so here it is.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>I\u2019m not actually talking about HRMS evolution as much as I\u2019m talking about the purchasing trend that\u2019s going on right now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Back in the good old days (the 1990\u2019s) everyone was trying to buy as huge an ERP as possible.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Most went with PeopleSoft HRMS if they were in the <st1 :country-region><\/st1><st1 :place>US<\/st1>, or if not, then SAP HRMS.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>(As usually I\u2019m talking about big companies \u2013 I really don\u2019t know what goes on in the small and mid markets).<span style=\"\">  <\/span>In the very late \u201890\u2019s everyone started to outsource.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Then in the early 2000\u2019s, everyone started going to point solutions (best in class applications focused on a single function).<span style=\"\">  <\/span>So what happened and why?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">ERP\u2019s were great because enterprise computing really changed.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Instead of having several huge mainframes that processed your data but didn\u2019t do much else well, ERP\u2019s provided a simplified user interface (we called them GUI\u2019s back then), with complete integration across the organization, and improved reporting.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>For once, supply chain (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), financials, HRMS, etc\u2026 were all tied into the same database.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Then came Y2K.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>This was a great time for software vendors as everyone tried to upgrade in \u201998 and \u201999, but it was also great for outsourcers.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Enough in-house organizations decided that enough was enough and HR\/PR outsourcing started to seep into the Fourtune 2000 market.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Outsourcers were able to implement faster, standardize practices, and take some of the risk burden off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Also around \u201998, XML began making headway into the market as a viable technology.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>While software makers and outsourcers really didn\u2019t integrate XML into their applications until after 2000, XML simply made everyone\u2019s life easier.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>What it also did, was reduce the dependency on the huge ERP system.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Rather than one huge system, you can now effectively take the best little pieces and connect them all seamlessly real time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">If you are Dub Dubs (like me), you get Oracle financials, PeopleSoft HR, SAP supply chain, Siebel CRM, Taleo ATS, Kronos TLM, Digital Think for learning, and wrap PlumTree\u2019s portal around the whole thing.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Whoa!!!<span style=\"\">  <\/span>You just can\u2019t (easily) do that with old ASCII file interfaces.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>However, you can do that (more easily) with XML.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>The new model of purchasing is to get the best of what\u2019s out there.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Synchronous messaging allows us to finally do this without worrying too much about data transfers.  (Michael Specht has a <a href=\"http:\/\/myhrblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/04\/messaging-and-workflow.html\">nice crosspoint<\/a> on this.  No arguments from me.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">What\u2019s next?<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Well it\u2019s already happening.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>If you take my 7 applications above, let some other vendor host all of them, wrap around the PlumTree portal, now you only have a single point of entry for all your applications!!<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Not only that, but you are not even managing the data interaction between the systems, your ASP is!!!<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Technology is getting more and more complicated, but it\u2019s a good thing for us that it is also getting more and more invisible.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both; padding-bottom: 0.25em;\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OK \u2013 so I promised a \u201cprimer on HRMS evolution\u201d so here it is.
