Anything can be strategic, but tasks are not when mis-applied to the wrong objectives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">HR is here to support business critical functions.  As \u201chuman resources\u201d it\u2019s our job to optimize the performance of that resource in the business function.  Here\u2019s a short list of how we do that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><!--[if !supportLists]-->  <!--[endif]-->Recruit to enhance overall productivity when all other (non-human) resources are considered<\/li>\n<li><!--[if !supportLists]-->  <!--[endif]-->Design benefit plans to attract and retain the demographics with the highest concentration of competencies your business needs.  Understand how plan design attracts demographic groups<\/li>\n<li><!--[if !supportLists]-->  <!--[endif]-->Contribute to the growth plans of your business.  Understand how local populations increase your chances of success as you move into new geographies<\/li>\n<li><!--[if !supportLists]-->  <!--[endif]-->Training and communicating to the business critical objective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Therefore, it\u2019s easy to define what HR strategy is not.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><!--[if !supportLists]-->  <!--[endif]-->Recruiters who recruit to job requisitions without understanding how this role fits into the business strategy are not strategic<\/li>\n<li><!--[if !supportLists]-->  <!--[endif]-->Benefit managers designing their plans without understanding how the benefit affects the demographic of their workforce<\/li>\n<li><!--[if !supportLists]-->  <!--[endif]-->The deployment of HR technology without understanding the end result business rational of \u201cwhy\u201d<\/li>\n<li><!--[if !supportLists]-->  <!--[endif]-->Most compliance crap<\/li>\n<li><!--[if !supportLists]-->  <!--[endif]-->Most tactical processes such as payroll gross to net, benefit enrollment<\/li>\n<li><!--[if !supportLists]-->  <!--[endif]-->Communications that forget the brand<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">What it basically comes down to is your focus on the business.  Each and every task performed should be with your executive team\u2019s strategic business plan in mind.
