In HR we constantly talk about operational efficiency and effectiveness, especially on this site where technology applications to business are of particular interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">However, most of the time we\u2019re internally focused \u2013 how can operational efficiencies be applied to make our own lives easier?  We should also be mindful that our efficiencies make us more prepared to launch a new product group or participate in acquisitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">More than a few CEOs ranked operational innovation at the top of their priority lists, viewing it as a matter of survival. \u201cWe had such a large operating loss that we had to focus entirely on a financial turnaround.\u201d Highcost, slow-responding, inefficient and antiquated are the adjectives CEOs used to describe the aspects of their current operations that prompted them to concentrate on operational innovation. One CEO stressed the enormity of past inefficiencies by labeling his enterprise\u2019s operation \u201ca cross between a government agency and a church.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Though most CEOs still thought of operations innovation as an efficiency play, others saw it as dual-purpose. Newfound efficiency and effectiveness not only allow them to control costs, but also help them to compete more formidably, take share and grow revenue. One CEO explained: \u201calthough the main focus is strategically on revenue generation, we first need to create the operational and technological foundation for that growth, so that product and customer strategies are sown on fertile ground.\u201d  ((IBM.  2006.  \u201cExpanding the Innovation Horizon.))<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Taking the opposite of the CEO adjectives, we should be focused on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Cost effective (not low cost)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Agile (not necessarily faster)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Efficient and effective <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Forwardly thoughtful products and processes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial\">You can download the full report <a href=\"http:\/\/www-931.ibm.com\/tela\/servlet\/Asset\/66859\/The_Global_CEO_Study_2006.pdf\">here<\/a> (registration required).<\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IBM\u2019s global survey of CEO\u2019s briefly mentions operational innovation as one of the keys to mitigating external threats and maximizing organizational agility for new opportunities.
