{"id":671,"date":"2007-02-06T02:00:49","date_gmt":"2007-02-06T10:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=671"},"modified":"2007-02-05T21:49:54","modified_gmt":"2007-02-06T05:49:54","slug":"employee-morale-and-the-company-car","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=671","title":{"rendered":"Employee Morale and the Company Car"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do a Google search on \u201cemployee morale\u201d and you will get \u201cabout 1,020,000 hits&#8221;.\u00a0 Evidently, it\u2019s a pretty hot topic!\u00a0 Actually, after I went through all the million plus hits, I found that there are actually 748,639 non-duplicative hits.\u00a0 Still quite a few, and definitely a hot topic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I found out all kinds of things about employee morale by reading through all these hits.\u00a0 For instance, I found that to improve morale, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisegeek.com\/how-can-i-improve-employee-morale.htm\" target=\"_blank\">A job well done might be rewarded with a gift card or a cash bonus<\/a>,\u201d but it would be a mistake\u00a0 to give <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sideroad.com\/Management\/boost_employee_morale.html\" target=\"_blank\">someone a company car.<\/a>\u00a0 You see, that would be \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unspecial.org\/UNS635\/UNS_635_T03.html\" target=\"_blank\">missing the point\u2026.a transparent manipulation<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 The employee doesn\u2019t really \u201cwant an expensive gift. He\/she wants to spend time together!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m unclear as to whether they want to spend more time with the boss or the hottie in the next cubicle.\u00a0 But I guess that\u2019s not important; just don\u2019t give them a car.<\/p>\n<p>I learned that \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sideroad.com\/Management\/boost_employee_morale.html\" target=\"_blank\">professional Coaches can establish methods by which employee and management morale will be permanently boosted and profitability assured<\/a>\u201d.\u00a0 That\u2019s right: boosting employee morale can <strong><em>ASSURE<\/em><\/strong> profitability<strong>!!!<\/strong>\u00a0 That really does deserve multiple exclamation points in bold.\u00a0 I mean, didn\u2019t anyone tell Ford?\u00a0 They lost billions this past quarter.\u00a0 What do you suppose is the biggest perk of working at a car company?\u00a0 Coincidence?\u00a0 I think not.<\/p>\n<p>Wait, I guess that must also mean that the atmosphere at ExxonMobil must be positively euphoric!\u00a0 After the record profits they had, there can\u2019t be any problem with employee morale.\u00a0 After all, I\u2019m sure all the employees are equally sharing in the record profits.\u00a0 How gasoline figures into the company car picture is something I haven&#8217;t quite figured out yet, but I&#8217;m working on it.<\/p>\n<p>I am learning so much, my head will explode!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This must be the secret that ExxonMobil discovered:\u00a0\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisegeek.com\/how-can-i-improve-employee-morale.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Boosting employee morale means that people will take more pride in their work, call in sick less often and be more productive<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 ExxonMobil figured this one out.\u00a0 A recent study revealed that during the last quarter, not one employee missed any work time.\u00a0 No paid time off was taken: not sick or vacation!\u00a0 This assured the record profits seen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There was a corresponding up tick in accrued liability for PTO at Exxon, but Exxon\u2019s auditors are petitioning the AICPA, FASB and SEC to be allowed to take the accrued liability to zero, noting that \u201cOur employees are so happy; they plan to never take any more time off and donate accrued PTO back to the company as their gift to the company.\u201d\u00a0 And as a side note, Exxon began giving gift cards to senior execs in lieu of company cars.\u00a0 As a result, Harry &#038;
