{"id":689,"date":"2007-03-02T01:00:24","date_gmt":"2007-03-02T09:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=689"},"modified":"2007-03-02T01:00:51","modified_gmt":"2007-03-02T09:00:51","slug":"considerations-for-erp-and-saas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=689","title":{"rendered":"Considerations for ERP and SaaS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jason Averbrook over at the <a href=\"http:\/\/knowledgeinfusion.typepad.com\/knowlege_infusion_blog\/2007\/01\/redefining_the_.html\" target=\"_blank\">Knowledge Infuser<\/a> recently wrote:<\/p>\n<p>Many of our customers are currently in the process of implementing best of breed \u201cOnDemand\u201d HR\/HCM\/Talent Management technology solutions for business processes such as Goal Alignment, Compensation Planning, Performance Management, Learning Management, and Recruiting.\u00a0 All of our customers are implementing these solutions on top of HCM foundation systems like PeopleSoft, Oracle, SAP, Lawson, etc\u2026.\u00a0\u00a0 ((Averbrook, Jason, January 9, 2007.\u00a0 \u201cRedefining the Implementation Process for On-Demand.\u201d\u00a0 Retrieved from <a href=\"http:\/\/knowledgeinfusion.typepad.com\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/knowledgeinfusion.typepad.com<\/a> on February 25, 2007.))<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at Jason\u2019s recommendations for implementing and planning for on-demand <a href=\"http:\/\/knowledgeinfusion.typepad.com\/knowlege_infusion_blog\/2007\/01\/redefining_the_.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d say that the trend over the last few years has certainly been to implement point solutions and especially those that are set up with multi-tenant and SaaS architectures have benefited.\u00a0 The time to live and the ability for a vendor to make updates to client installations without long upgrade cycles is a definite advantage.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jason however, makes an excellent point that the planning for these implementations can\u2019t be short-cutted.\u00a0 Quicker implementation cycles does not mean one can speed up the planning and evaluation process.<\/p>\n<p>However, reading his article made me think of something else.\u00a0 First, ERP\u2019s are certainly making a comeback with new and improved functionality.\u00a0 Some of the modules that would directly compete with point solutions that I\u2019ve seen in the last year have been as good and sometimes better than the point solutions.\u00a0 The inclusion of SOA into core architectures is nice for the point solutions, but in reality the capability of integration is a couple years away.<\/p>\n<p>The trend is there, but how does one make a decision as to which option is better, or if ERP is still even viable.\u00a0 Here are a few factors that I think might be important:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How critical is integration?<\/li>\n<li>Will the point solutions update the functions you want them to?
