{"id":716,"date":"2007-04-05T01:00:39","date_gmt":"2007-04-05T09:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=716"},"modified":"2007-04-05T01:01:01","modified_gmt":"2007-04-05T09:01:01","slug":"defining-talent-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=716","title":{"rendered":"Defining Talent Management"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Talent management is a true buzz word around HR these days, has been for a few years now.\u00a0 We all know the components of talent management: performance, compensation process, succession, recruitment, learning, competencies.\u00a0 All of these are major components to an overall talent strategy.\u00a0 Inclusive in this list should also be technology.\u00a0 But what really, is talent management?<\/p>\n<p>Jim Holincheck <a href=\"http:\/\/blogerp.typepad.com\/hcm_research\/2007\/03\/all_talent_mana.html\" target=\"_blank\">gets it right<\/a>.\u00a0 Talent management has nothing to do with the process, or the technology, but it\u2019s about a philosophy and tactic that you use to get to your goals.\u00a0 The process and technology of talent management systems are only a tool you use to get to your strategy.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Instead of thinking about talent management as a set of applications, think of it as levers that managers and executives can pull to achieve specific business outcomes.\u00a0 If I want to improve customer satisfaction, then I should focus on how I recruit customer-facing employees, develop them, manage them, and motivate them.\u00a0 Recruitment, development, performance management, reward\/motivation are the levers.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ((Jim Holincheck, March 29, 2007.\u00a0 &#8220;All Talent Management All of the Time.&#8221;\u00a0 Retrieved from <a href=\"http:\/\/blogerp.typepad.com\/hcm_research\/2007\/03\/all_talent_mana.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/blogerp.typepad.com<\/a>\/ on March 29, 2007.))<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Way back in the beginning of this site, I ventured to <a href=\"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=267\" target=\"_blank\">define HR strategy<\/a>.\u00a0 This definition was as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>shaping the workforce around the organization\u2019s business needs, and managing behavioral changes to match the desired environmental goals.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If HR strategy seeks to shape the workforce around the business need, then we can see how understanding the necessary set of competencies defined in our talent practices, and performing and compensating our employees towards the achievement of those competencies supports the strategy.\u00a0 We can see a direct path for our succession plans to shape our future executive teams, and how learning supports the future of our talented employees.\u00a0 We can especially see how recruiting and onboarding shapes the workforce by bringing on the type of skills the organization needs to grow and prosper in the future.\u00a0 There is a direct relationship between talent, the HR strategy, and the overall business objective.\u00a0 If you are seeking greater profits, or increased innovation, you can manage your talent to achieve those goals, but how you approach them may be very different.<\/p>\n<p>So what is talent management?
