{"id":739,"date":"2007-07-10T01:00:23","date_gmt":"2007-07-10T09:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=739"},"modified":"2007-07-10T01:02:07","modified_gmt":"2007-07-10T09:02:07","slug":"how-to-lie-with-analytics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=739","title":{"rendered":"How to Lie With Analytics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was listening to a presentation being given by a timekeeping vendor.\u00a0 Within the demonstration, a report was run providing a detail of when people decided to take sick days, and the report stated that the large majority of sick days were taken on Mondays and Fridays.\u00a0 Our brilliant analyst noted that there was a high degree of employees in almost any company that abused their sick days to create long weekends.\u00a0 His system would help the company identify these people and fix the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Intrigued, I decided to look into my own timesheets (I\u2019m a consultant, so I have a long history of records).\u00a0 Turns out, I pretty much took 80% of my sick days on Mondays and Fridays.\u00a0 Considering I\u2019m a person who nobody actually cares if I take a couple hours here and there (I do work 3000 hours a year after all), I\u2019m not anywhere close to lying about sick time.\u00a0 These are not days that I\u2019m \u201csick\u201d but days that I\u2019m actually SICK.<\/p>\n<p>I began to wonder why I tend to get sick during weekends and on vacations.\u00a0 A friend gave me some good insight.\u00a0 High performing people have bodies that tend to know when there is downtime coming and can force illnesses into those times to create rest.\u00a0 Now I have no idea if this is true, but the proportion of time I\u2019ve been sick during vacations versus work time is completely off kilter.<\/p>\n<p>We use analytics to create truths (ok, trends) from which we extrapolate \u201cfacts.\u201d\u00a0 Unfortunately these facts coming from quantitative data are about as good as anything you get with statistics \u2013 you can create a version of truth for everything.\u00a0 You can find a correlation for your best employees and show how they abuse the sick time system to create 5 long weekends a year.\u00a0 (I just took Friday and Monday \u2013 I had a 104 degree fever).\u00a0 There might be people who went to Las Vegas.\u00a0 And I guess it was true\u2026 I was laying in bed fairly drugged up.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was listening to a presentation being given by a timekeeping vendor.\u00a0 Within the demonstration, a report was run providing a detail of when people decided to take sick days, and the report stated that the large majority of sick&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_coblocks_attr":"","_coblocks_dimensions":"","_coblocks_responsive_height":"","_coblocks_accordion_ie_support":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[27],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-739","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-data-metrics"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/739","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=739"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/739\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=739"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=739"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=739"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
