{"id":76,"date":"2005-07-10T20:47:00","date_gmt":"2005-07-11T04:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=76"},"modified":"2005-12-02T01:44:55","modified_gmt":"2005-12-02T01:44:55","slug":"what-is-reporting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=76","title":{"rendered":"What is Reporting?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Actually, this is another one of those annoying buzz words.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>We\u2019re going to call it business intelligence or BI.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>BI software is simply a tool that allows you to extract data out of a database.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>We\u2019ll continue this discussion for a couple of posts, just like with onboarding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">For our purposes, BI tools will fall into 3 main categories.<\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" start=\"1\" type=\"1\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"\">Report      or query tools embedded into database software at the application level,<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"\">Reporting      tools external to database software utilizing an ODBC connection,<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"\">Analytical      tools external to database using OLAP technology.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">We\u2019ll leave it there for now.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>We will also not going to discuss embedded \u201cquery\u201d tools specific to a vendor or application.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>We\u2019re also not going to talk about IT directed tools at the database layer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">First of all, I\u2019d like to make my first assertion that organizations spend too much time and money on multiple disparate BI tools.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Finance has one, HR has another, CRM has a third.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>There may be more for the ERP or whatever else is out there.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Organizations that are organized will also have a data warehouse.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Organizations that are advanced but not organized will have multiple data warehouses \u2013 each with its own OLAP tool.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.geocities.com\/weswu\/blog\/Reporting1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><o :p><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The goal is to centralize BI.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>If you can centralize all of your BI into a single ODBC tool, create a data warehouse and centralized reporting out of that into single OLAP tool, all of your organizational data needs can be served out of a single platform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.geocities.com\/weswu\/blog\/Reporting2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That\u2019s all for today, we\u2019ll talk more about tools later this week.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both; padding-bottom: 0.25em;\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Actually, this is another one of those annoying buzz words.
