Some lessons are just universal in life.\u00a0 Others are not.\u00a0 Here are a few that I came up with while extraordinarily bored:<\/p>\n
1) If you don\u2019t know how to drive a big car, don\u2019t buy and SUV
\nCorollary: Sometimes you really don\u2019t need PeopleSoft or SAP.\u00a0 Don’t go for big scale just because everyone else did – sometimes the added complexity is jut going to make matters worse<\/p>\n
2) Smokers should think of cigarettes like any other litter \u2013 they don\u2019t get flicked out the car window
\nCorollary:\u00a0 Go paperless \u2013 save the world<\/p>\n
3) When I\u2019m blaring my horn at you, look around and figure out what\u2019s going on.\u00a0 Don\u2019t keep coming at me pretending to be clueless
\nCorollary:\u00a0 There are some pretty good warning signs out there that your function or employee population is at risk.\u00a0 Listen, diagnose, and then act quickly.\u00a0 But don\u2019t ignore.<\/p>\n
4) Don\u2019t tailgate me when the fast lane is wide open
\nCorollary: Figure out what\u2019s slowing your progress.\u00a0 There is often a better way either in process, technology, or staffing.\u00a0 If you sit on your butt and are frustrated by your HR department\u2019s progress but don\u2019t make a move to fix it, don\u2019t complain to me.<\/p>\n
5) At a four way stop, the guy turning left waits for the oncoming traffic to pass before proceeding, not the other way around
\nCorollary:\u00a0 Process is important.\u00a0 You define things a certain way for a reason \u2013 often efficiency or compliance.\u00a0 Deviations from defined processes sometimes (not always) spell disaster<\/p>\n
