{"id":772,"date":"2007-09-04T01:00:53","date_gmt":"2007-09-04T09:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=772"},"modified":"2007-09-04T01:00:53","modified_gmt":"2007-09-04T09:00:53","slug":"helicopter-parenting-and-management-styles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=772","title":{"rendered":"Helicopter Parenting and Management Styles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Much conversation has been made about Generation Y Milennials and their desire and ability to enter the workforce with a bang.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been trying to figure out how to channel their energy in the right direction as they seem to have a different understanding not only of the world but also of technology.\u00a0 In many way\u2019s it\u2019s reminiscent of the 60\u2019s (the baby boomers) and how they changed the economy.<\/p>\n<p>However, a new theory stunned me in a conversation I had recently.\u00a0 In this, some milennials will have every skill and worldly view we expect them to have, but noe of the ability to manage their own lives.\u00a0 This is the theory of the helicopter parent, and the Gen Y child.\u00a0 Helicopter parents are those that \u201chover\u201d over their children at all times.\u00a0 Another name for them are the soccer moms and dads.\u00a0 They schedule every activity for their children and ferry them between groups, sports, and lessons all day long, week in and week out.<\/p>\n<p>The theory states that this will produce an exceptionally gifted child.\u00a0 The type of skills we\u2019d all want to have in our own workforces.\u00a0 These children will have the ability to think in teams (sports), be creative (art, dance, music), and are exceptionally analytical.\u00a0 Unfortunately, they won\u2019t be able to transition to managing themselves easily as they have always been \u201cmanaged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While I don\u2019t subscribe fully to this theory, I\u2019m sure it will apply in some degree to a segment of the Gen Y population, possibly more than in prior generations.\u00a0 Most competent people hate being micro-managed.\u00a0 Micro-managers are needed because there are incompetent people out there who would either fail, or not get anything done without them.\u00a0 Instead, here we may have a population that IS competent and may need closer supervision anyway.<\/p>\n<p>The key is to identify which Gen Y\u2019s need more attention quickly, the drawback being that you\u2019ll lose people if you don\u2019t manage them enough, or you\u2019ll lose self directed people who you manage too much.\u00a0 Once you know who your \u201cneedy\u201d Gen Y\u2019s are, it\u2019s about weaning them off of supervision and building their confidence.\u00a0 Of course they are already supremely confident, but they won\u2019t necessarily instinctively make decisions without some guidance first.<\/p>\n<p>Gen Y is still an extraordinarily high potential generation, but knowing how they were shaped and came to be HiPo\u2019s can also help us get through some of the hurdles we\u2019ll face with them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Much conversation has been made about Generation Y Milennials and their desire and ability to enter the workforce with a bang.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been trying to figure out how to channel their energy in the right direction as they seem to&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_coblocks_attr":"","_coblocks_dimensions":"","_coblocks_responsive_height":"","_coblocks_accordion_ie_support":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[25,16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-772","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-workforce-management","category-workforce-planning"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/772","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=772"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/772\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=772"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=772"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=772"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
