{"id":807,"date":"2007-11-07T01:00:56","date_gmt":"2007-11-07T09:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=807"},"modified":"2007-11-07T01:01:26","modified_gmt":"2007-11-07T09:01:26","slug":"anonymous-public-peer-reviews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=807","title":{"rendered":"Anonymous Public Peer Reviews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In what I think is a rather unusual twist to the performance and peer review process, the Canadian website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coworkers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Coworkers.com<\/a> is a community of users that seems to focus on the peer review.<\/p>\n<p>There are several problems with this that I can see.\u00a0 First of all, these are unsolicited reviews for the most part.\u00a0 While there is a mechanism for a person to register on the site and request reviews from people, most reviews of this type will probably be facilitated through a non-public, behind the firewall process.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Certainly if I\u2019m soliciting peer reviews, I\u2019d like to ensure that people can give me feedback that I can act upon, but also that it\u2019s fairly private since the entire world (literally) doesn\u2019t need to know about my work performance.<\/p>\n<p>Second, the people with the most motivation to post something on-line are the people with negative reviews.\u00a0 This means that a person with several reviews will have a large amount of negative bias built into the process.\u00a0 I\u2019m all for feedback, but I don\u2019t think this is the best way to facilitate it.<\/p>\n<p>Third, since these are anonymous reviews, there is really nothing saying that the reviews are accurate, meaningful, or thoughtful in any way.\u00a0 That really takes all the value out of the content.\u00a0 I\u2019m all for anonymity when it\u2019s needed.\u00a0 Sometimes you just need to have anonymous surveys such as when you do your annual employee engagement survey.\u00a0 And of course when you\u2019re surveying a group of people who currently work with you or for you, this might also be meaningful as the defined set of reviewers is known.\u00a0 However, when someone who may have worked with you 20 years ago and has an axe to grind is allowed to post negative comments, that needs to be somehow controlled.<\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, this is taking open collaboration and community one step too far.\u00a0 Reviews should be a private thing.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t have the guts to provide negative feedback to someone to their face, certainly don\u2019t do it on-line anonymously where they have no chance to respond or correct their actions since they may not know the complete context.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In what I think is a rather unusual twist to the performance and peer review process, the Canadian website Coworkers.com is a community of users that seems to focus on the peer review.
