{"id":851,"date":"2008-02-21T01:00:35","date_gmt":"2008-02-21T09:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=851"},"modified":"2008-02-21T01:00:43","modified_gmt":"2008-02-21T09:00:43","slug":"give-me-a-%e2%80%9csexy%e2%80%9d-ui-any-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=851","title":{"rendered":"Give Me A \u201cSexy\u201d UI Any Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/humancapitalist.com\/?p=491\" target=\"_blank\">Jason<\/a> and I might have to disagree on this one.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Can we please stop saying \u201c\u2026and the user interface is sexy\u201d!\u00a0 User interfaces should not be \u201csexy\u201d nor are they!\u00a0 User interfaces should be clean and simple, presenting only the information necessary for the task at hand.\u00a0 The user interface should be designed with the end user as the sole focus, not how the applications and workflow should look and be laid out nicely on the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong\u2026UI is important and I have been talking a lot about usability for the past 3 years.\u00a0 I really think though, many of the HCM application vendors are missing the boat, investing in fancy-pants AJAX-Flex technology and attempting to drive users into their application instead of going to where the users hang out\u2026primarily Microsoft Office, Google, and their defined home page of choice (mine happens to be iGoogle).\u00a0 That means utilizing third-party plugins, building widgets, enabling RSS, etc.\u00a0 ((Corsello, Jason, October 24, 2007.\u00a0 \u201cUser Interfaces Shouldn\u2019t Be Sexy.\u201d))<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>From the vendor standpoint, often a sexy UI is just a sales tool and hides deficiencies under the covers.\u00a0 However, there are good reasons to want a sexy UI, assuming that all is well behind the scenes in terms of functionality and technology.\u00a0 First, a very sexy UI will create a desire in end users to try and use the product.\u00a0 If the UI is engineered well to actually make the lives of the end user easier, then not only will initial adoption be higher, but long term adoption will also be better.\u00a0 All technology is about adoption.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to talent management, HR has a history of problematic technologies.\u00a0 Managers don\u2019t want to go into the talent app, they want their simple spreadsheets and word documents.\u00a0 We\u2019d rather them in the applications where the processes and analytics are.<\/p>\n<p>Jason is right, we want integration, RSS, widgets and plugins.\u00a0 But I also want users in the HR apps.\u00a0 Sexy might be the best way of doing that.<\/p>\n<p>(apologies to Jason for the very late rebuttal)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jason and I might have to disagree on this one.
