{"id":863,"date":"2008-03-11T01:00:50","date_gmt":"2008-03-11T09:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=863"},"modified":"2008-03-11T01:01:16","modified_gmt":"2008-03-11T09:01:16","slug":"what-is-talent-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=863","title":{"rendered":"What is Talent Management?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jpie.com\/?p=37\" target=\"_blank\">JPIE wonders<\/a>.\u00a0 I answer.\u00a0 Sort of.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hype aside.\u00a0 What is talent management?\u00a0 Software, services, software as a service \u2013 what?\u00a0 What components make up talent management?\u00a0 Applicant tracking, succession planning, compensation, training, assessments, metrics \u2013 what?\u00a0 Where does it start and where does it end, and why?\u00a0 Exactly what are the boundaries of talent management?\u00a0 What\u2019s not included in talent management?\u00a0 Engagement?\u00a0 Ask yourself, is executive search a part of talent management or not, and why?<\/p>\n<p>Confused.\u00a0 I am.\u00a0 The human capital buyer sure is.\u00a0 And, truthfully, so are most human capital vendors \u2013 though they probably won\u2019t say it out loud.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Talent management is simply a Human Resources exercise that utilizes various strategies and processes to ensure the optimal health of the future workforce<\/strong>.\u00a0 Talent management certainly is not software or a software delivery system.\u00a0 It\u2019s simply a practice within the broader spectrum of Human Resources.\u00a0 There are of course components of talent management that we can utilize to make it easier to understand.<\/p>\n<p>What are these components?\u00a0 So far, these are part of those strategies and processes that we talked about above:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Talent acquisition:\u00a0 Note, this is not applicant tracking.\u00a0 Applicant tracking refers more to a technology that helps the process.\u00a0 But acquiring talent and successfully onboarding them is really the component we\u2019re talking about.<\/p>\n<p>Performance management:\u00a0 Again, this is not the technology, although technology helps.\u00a0 This is about measuring the workforce individual by individual and creating goals that will continuously improve those measurements year over year.<\/p>\n<p>Compensation management:\u00a0 Routinely part of talent systems, this is only part of talent in that incentives are available and related to future performance.\u00a0 Otherwise, compensation (IMHO) is really part of total rewards.<\/p>\n<p>Employee development:\u00a0 Going a step further than performance management, this involves the grooming of the next generation of leaders and senior professionals.<\/p>\n<p>Succession planning:\u00a0 Succession is to me a microcosm of the broader talent process in that it focuses on a smaller population, but really performs the same general activities.\u00a0 It\u2019s worth pointing out specifically only because those top 200 employees really are critical to the future strategy and growth.<\/p>\n<p>Learning:\u00a0 Continuously planting key skills, competencies and knowledge into the workforce to create and mold the workforce into what you want.<\/p>\n<p>Workforce planning:\u00a0 Figuring out what your workforce should look like now and in the future, and creating a plan to get there through all of the above processes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m sure I\u2019ve left something out, but in general and simplistically, that\u2019s my opinion, and I\u2019m sticking to it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JPIE wonders.\u00a0 I answer.\u00a0 Sort of.
