{"id":902,"date":"2008-06-02T01:00:49","date_gmt":"2008-06-02T09:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=902"},"modified":"2008-06-02T01:02:05","modified_gmt":"2008-06-02T09:02:05","slug":"gaming-and-collaboration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=902","title":{"rendered":"Gaming and Collaboration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gen Y.\u00a0 They sit at their PC\u2019s, play their games, and avoid all real social contact.\u00a0 As they enter the workforce, their lack of social skills will be a mismatch to that of the broader workforce who value direct, one to one communications.\u00a0 Their poor verbal and presentation skills will make them less persuasive.\u00a0 So says the current establishment.\u00a0 Of course there are some drawbacks to the current generation\u2019s personal habits.\u00a0 However, I\u2019d suggest that not all is ruinous.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a popular game as an example.\u00a0 World of Warcraft (WoW) is a popular MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game \u2013 I think I got that right).\u00a0 Within this game, the player enters an online world and interacts with other (real) people.\u00a0 The first action taken is to create the character.\u00a0 The goal of the character would be to increase their proficiency in their chosen profession.\u00a0 For example, if someone is a priest (don\u2019t know if this is a real character in WoW) then they will need to perform the tasks that will make them a better priest.\u00a0 They will get types of points related to experience that allow them to allocate new resources to bettering themselves at their chosen position.\u00a0 Think of these as competencies.\u00a0 So already, the player is immersed in an understanding of competencies and improving only the ones that will be valuable to them.<\/p>\n<p>The next step is then to battle against other players.\u00a0 This may be done in guild settings or teams.\u00a0 The level of coordination here is amazing.\u00a0 Not only are players battling against other real live people, but against other teams who have developed team tactics specifically to defeat them.\u00a0 Within this setting, our fabled player along with her team will not only develop an approach and strategy for battle, but they are also in constant communication.\u00a0 Many games have both the capability for voice and written real time chat.\u00a0 So while in the midst of a battle, voice and written collaboration is happening real time.\u00a0 All of this collaboration is happening with people they may never have met, and in different countries.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d theorize that while some of these games are not developing skills we developed when we were younger, the games are also doing a better job ad developing other skills.\u00a0 Competency management and self evaluation, collaboration, and teamwork.\u00a0 So it\u2019s different, but let\u2019s hold judgement until we see how it all plays out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gen Y.\u00a0 They sit at their PC\u2019s, play their games, and avoid all real social contact.\u00a0 As they enter the workforce, their lack of social skills will be a mismatch to that of the broader workforce who value direct, one&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_coblocks_attr":"","_coblocks_dimensions":"","_coblocks_responsive_height":"","_coblocks_accordion_ie_support":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[45,12,20,16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-902","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-collaboration","category-learning-management","category-talent-management","category-workforce-planning"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/902","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=902"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/902\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=902"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=902"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=902"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
