{"id":910,"date":"2008-08-13T01:00:53","date_gmt":"2008-08-13T09:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=910"},"modified":"2008-08-13T01:00:57","modified_gmt":"2008-08-13T09:00:57","slug":"cycling-concepts-and-hr-time-trials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=910","title":{"rendered":"Cycling Concepts and HR: Time Trials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In cycling, the time trial is also known as the race of truth.\u00a0 It is the only time in cycling (triathlons excluded as that\u2019s not real cycling\u2026) where you are not allowed to draft or engage in team tactics.\u00a0 In the time trial, it\u2019s all about you and your abilities.\u00a0 In HR, there are some activities that you really have to own.\u00a0 This is not to say that end to end processes don\u2019t involve other people, but that HR should not be afraid to step up and take ownership at the appropriate time.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that oftentimes HR focuses too much on the tactical elements of our functions.\u00a0 When we become strategic, it also means that we should be thinking more broadly about our businesses and focusing outside of the HR function.\u00a0 There will also be significant areas where the business needs support, and all too often we think it\u2019s IT\u2019s job or an operational issue so therefore not our responsibility.\u00a0 I\u2019ll give you a couple examples:<\/p>\n<p>Knowledge management has traditionally not been part of the HR function\u2019s domain.\u00a0 However, learning, skills, competencies all often reside within the HR function.\u00a0 If there are synergies anywhere within the organization, it\u2019s within HR.\u00a0 I certainly realize that the knowledge being managed is often operational in nature, but certainly HR should play a major role in the development of this function.\u00a0 (I do support this being a separate function by the way).\u00a0 While knowledge management is already a developed function in many organizations, it was (at some point) an area where HR had the perfect opportunity to step up.<\/p>\n<p>Another example would be Web 2.0.\u00a0 Once again, Web 2.0 is about employee interactions, learning, collaboration, and innovation.\u00a0 More importantly, it\u2019s about our employee populations and augmenting\/governing their interactions with each other.\u00a0 Again, these areas are not specifically in the domain of HR, but again, this is an emerging area where HR can step up and broaden its scope within the organization as well as enhancing it\u2019s position in areas that are not seen as administrative commodities.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not advocating that we go after every area that doesn\u2019t have an owner, but we should look for areas within the business that have clear relationships with the work that we already do, and make ourselves more integrated with the overall business.\u00a0 Sometimes we just need to step up \u2013 building credibility is about what we\u2019re willing to own.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In cycling, the time trial is also known as the race of truth.\u00a0 It is the only time in cycling (triathlons excluded as that\u2019s not real cycling\u2026) where you are not allowed to draft or engage in team tactics.\u00a0 In&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_coblocks_attr":"","_coblocks_dimensions":"","_coblocks_responsive_height":"","_coblocks_accordion_ie_support":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[8,13,46],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-910","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-strategies","category-knowledge-management","category-web-20"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/910","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=910"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/910\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=910"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=910"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=910"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
