{"id":918,"date":"2008-06-25T01:00:51","date_gmt":"2008-06-25T09:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=918"},"modified":"2008-06-25T01:01:06","modified_gmt":"2008-06-25T09:01:06","slug":"offboarding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/?p=918","title":{"rendered":"Offboarding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a single offboarding experience that sticks out in my mind as one of the most positive work experiences I\u2019ve ever had.\u00a0 While these days we have technology and alumni networks to help us out, successful offboarding is more about the people than about the technology or process.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, I had not been looking for a job as I was honestly quite pleased with my situation.\u00a0 It was a good company, I was surrounded by a good team, and I was paid fairly.\u00a0 As always, the headhunters call, and while I ignore almost all of them or try rto refer friends, one came across my phone that sounded intrigueing.\u00a0 I did call back and after doing some research on the industry, I landed interviews and multiple offers at the top three firms in the country (and probably globally).<\/p>\n<p>I walked into \u201cKaren\u2019s\u201d office on the appointed day and gave her my resignation letter.\u00a0 Although there was some disappointment, \u201cKaren\u201d only asked, \u201cIs this really what you want?\u201d\u00a0 The answer was a clear \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 With good employees, there is always the desire to offer more money, a promotion, or whatever it might be that the employee \u201cwants.\u201d\u00a0 But we really need to understand the drivers for voluntary turnover.\u00a0 For employees who are unhappy, no amount of money or position will save them in the long term.\u00a0 Some employees will offer a resignation hoping you\u2019ll give them more money.\u00a0 In this case, there are two possibilities:\u00a0 1) your compensation program sucks.\u00a0 2) you really don\u2019t need to keep this employee \u2013 they are not engaged.<\/p>\n<p>But for employees like me who simply needed different learning opportunities, you\u2019re not going to keep them anyway.\u00a0 However, you can make professional friends and enemies based on how you offboard.\u00a0 Karen wanted to make sure I hadn\u2019t made a rash decision and upon seeing that I had thought through my decisions carefully, she didn\u2019t argue or offer anything to stay.\u00a0 It conveyed the message that what I thought was best for myself was indeed (most likely) the best thing.\u00a0 Her approach was that of a friend and colleague, but honest, caring, and thoughtful as a leader.<\/p>\n<p>This is a blog about technology, but we should never forget that technology is only an enabler for putting our best foot forward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a single offboarding experience that sticks out in my mind as one of the most positive work experiences I\u2019ve ever had.\u00a0 While these days we have technology and alumni networks to help us out, successful offboarding is more&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_coblocks_attr":"","_coblocks_dimensions":"","_coblocks_responsive_height":"","_coblocks_accordion_ie_support":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[28,8,9],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-918","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-communications","category-strategies","category-onboarding"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/918","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=918"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/918\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=918"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=918"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/systematichr.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=918"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
