Is Oracle’s Best Good Enough?

This article from Baselinemag.com takes a look at Oracle post PeopleSoft aquisition. It’s a good question as Oracle has never been good enough if we talk about HR. Their financials have always been highly rated, but for the major ERP’s, the HR functionality has been sub-par at best. At worst, Oracle HR has been a complete failure.

The chief information officer of Qualcomm, a communications equipment manufacturer, has multimillion-dollar investments in both Oracle and PeopleSoft software, but he feared the bad feelings between the companies would make his PeopleSoft investment moot.

However, Fjeldheim says, he was “pleasantly surprised.” Employees from PeopleSoft are integrating key recordkeeping and tracking pieces of Qualcomm’s PeopleSoft applications into Oracle’s next-generation applications suite, called Fusion. ((Gage, Deborah, February 6, 2006. “Is Oracle’s Best Good Enough,” Baselinemag.com. Retrieved from baselinemag.com on March 11, 2006.))

Obviously I’m not a huge fan of the current Oracle HR software, but I was surprised last year to find out how many PeopleSoft developers had been retained. At that time last year, PeopleSoft loyalists wern’t too excited about working at Oracle, the long-time arch nemesis. It seems that perhaps the tides have changed and the Oracle vision is catching on. I was at a Oracle demo and the mix of Oracle and PeopleSoft employees was completely transparent to the client. If Oracle can package enough of the PeopleSoft HR expertise into Oracle Fusion HR, I think they’ll be able to provide a decent package.

It’s also interesting to note that many former PS folk left Oracle shortly after the acquisition and have since returned to Oracle.
