Google’s Ten Golden Rules For Talent

It’s hard not to be enamored with certain technologies.  The truly cutting edge personalized nature of web 2.0 is easy to adopt.  My personal favorites are Google products, Firefox, and the engine of this site, WordPress.  The reason is that these products are truly extensible from various standpoints.  Not only are these products impressive, but companies like these (ok – maybe not WordPress) are attracting great talent very easily while others are trying to develop brand strategies to increase their pipelines.  So when the CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt says “Getting the most out of knowledge workers will be the key to business success for the next quarter century. Here’s how we do it at Google” I listen, and so should you.

At google, we think business guru Peter Drucker well understood how to manage the new breed of “knowledge workers.” After all, Drucker invented the term in 1959. There’s enough packed into this article about the quality of work, communications and brand, innovation, culture, etc to keep me going for a few days.  Instead, I’m just going to point you in the direction.  Keep in mind this was written for Newsweek over a year ago.

    You are forgetting one of my personal favorite Web 2.0 applications – SalesForce.Com. And I am still on perhaps the oldest Web 2.0 app – MyYahoo. But I do use Gmail and google for groups, newsalerts, searches, etc.

    Regarding Google – it is really great to see such a successful company have such a laser focus on talent. They aren’t the first, but they are the currently the hottest employment brand. I can think of a few others including:

    – Microsoft from 1986 to about 2002
    – General Electric
    – General Foods (trained all killer Brand Management MBA’s from about 1970 to 1985)
    – Pepsico – continuous source of the best talent for consumer products world
    – Goldman Sachs – gold standard for financial services industry
    – McKinsey & Co.

    All of these companies had/have a dedication to hiring the very best, challenging them, developing them and evaluating them. None of these companies are afraid to fire C players (up or put) and all of them yield great rewards for great performance.
