While I’m not a “communicator” in HRIT we are often involved in communications at levels we don’t think about. Basically, any time we’re implementing a system that will include a form of manager or employee self service, or designing a report for distribution, we should be thinking about what the communication effect is. More broadly than that, we should really be pre-planning what necessary actions we should take and how we should be thinking about the potential ramifications of our output. I ran across this great research paper on the “7 Habits of Highly Effective Benefit Communications” and I really thought most of it had broader scope than just benefits. I’ll summarize, but have a look when you get some time.
- Determine your goals
- Ingrain your message consistently and repetitively
- Get your employee’s attention
- Keep it simple
- Ask for feedback
